Me, Organic?

Just last weekend Shannon and I were talking about food and food ingredients... specifically high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), whole wheat foods, and added salt & sugars. We agreed that boy, it'd surely be nice if we had the resources to buy all organic, healthy foods! Most of the local grocers have a little tiny section of organic/vegetarian choices, but you certainly couldn't do the bulk of your shopping there. And you'd better believe I won't be frequenting Whole Foods, either (a.k.a. Whole Paycheck)!

WELL, it seems our local Meijer is now carrying its own line of organic products! Yay! Today I checked it out and came home with a few things to try: organic whole wheat pasta, tomato sauce, whole wheat flour, ketchup, milled flaxseed, and infant cereal. Currently Meijer carries a little over 200 products, with the promise of more. I'm always on the lookout for wholesome foods, but I'm excited to go a step further--without breaking the bank!

Karen,
You are already doing the greatest think you could for Olivia, based on your decision at age 12! I have four wonderful kids that I am trying to be a good Christian mom for. I know organic foods are more expensive, but I have an excellent Web site for you. It has recommendations on things you should buy organic if possible, things to buy organic if cost is not an option, and things to not bother buying organic. You can check this out at www.consumerreports.org/cro/food/organic-products-206/when-buying-organic-pays-and-doesnt.htm. Enjoy these years with that wonderful baby!

God Bless,
Lynne

Thanks, Dr. Eldridge! I looked it up right away, although it's at a different site:

I wonder how you found my blog...?

Hey, I admire your attempt at going "organic!" Josh and I have gone almost completely organic--at least have ruled out foods with HFCS, enriched flour, high added sugar content, etc...
You need to try Barilla Plus pasta. It tastes the same as regular pasta (and costs the same)in my opinion and is packed full of healthy ingredients. You can do so much with pasta, and this has tons of protein and fiber--great find.
Good luck.

I'm with you, Karen but we can't afford to go organic right now. I use wheat flour in baking as much as I can and buy lots of fruits and veggies for snacks so we don't rely on processed starchy foods. I echo Sara, I've heard barilla plus is awesome! I've tried some whole wheat pastas that weren't very tasty, but barilla plus is supposed to be delicious! Wish I had a meijer's to shop at in Ohio. They must just be a MI chain.

By the way, Jenny Muth just posted a muffin recipe using flaxseed on her blog. Check it out!
