One of my former students is having a bridal shower today.
Am I getting old? Certainly not!
Do I feel old?
To quote the endearing Jim Halpert, "Absolutely I do."
Anyway, the aforementioned shower was sort of a last-minute thing, evidently. My mind scrambled this morning, trying to come up with a thoughtful but frugal gift. The bride's registry choices, Kohl's & Sears, left me dubious as to the latter of my concerns.
Then, I remembered my gift closet. Okay, it's not an entire closet, just a big box in my closet.
The wedding is in December. I pulled out an assortment of Christmas decor to help deck her newlywed halls... a cinnamon-y candle, a cute container, a CD of all the classic Christmas songs, scented antibacterial soap, Christmas tree candles, and some pine-scented air freshener. (Can you tell I lo-o-o-o-ove smelly stuff?)
I don't remember what I paid for these items exactly. But I always try to pick up a few nice things after Christmas, when everything is 75-90% off. I know I didn't pay more than $5 for the whole lot. I'm satisfied with the outcome, and maybe a new bride & groom will have a cozier Christmas as a result.

Great idea! I also grab the "sale" Christmas items with summer weddings in mind. We got married in December and had plenty of decorations and ornaments given to us - but plenty of my friends who got married in the summer found themselves scrambling for Christmas stuff during those first few tight years. So this summer I've been giving Christmas tree ornaments, cookie cutters, etc. I'm glad I'm not the only one!! :-)
Great idea! I too have a gift closet (actual closet) where I fill up with things throughout the year when there is an amazing clearance or anything - just for the reason you said! Great ideas!
