I mistakenly bought a case of tomato
paste, instead of tomato
sauce. Oops. So I now have 12 cans of a product I don't use, and zero cans of the stuff I need! I'm wondering... the paste is so, so thick. Can I just add some water until it
looks like the sauce?

That should work just fine. You might want to add some seasoning with the water and paste just to make it a little better. but it's not nessisary. So good luck with your tomato sauce adventure!
i don't know about that paste idea.... kind of makes me nervous. i'm not one to experiment in the kitchen though. but i have a delish homemade spaghetti sauce recipe that includes paste. you'll be able to make your own sauce for months if you want to try this. you'll need:
*ground beef -- i think i use about 1/2 lb.
*onion--1/2 a lg. chopped
*lawry's seasoning-- can't give you a measurement... sorry i eyeball it. but give it a good bit
*garlic powder--just a few dashes
*black pepper-- some more dashes
*1 lg. can tomato sauce (29 oz)
*1 med. can tomato paste (12 oz)
*3-4 bay leaves
*2 tbs brown sugar -- just enough to neutralize the acidity of the tomato
in lg. pot (i use my dutch oven) saute onion. then add beef. season beef. add tom sauce, tom paste, a small can of water if you want to thin it a bit. drop in bay leaves, add brn. sugar. bring to a bubble, reduce heat and simmer on low. the longer the better. remove bay leaves when finished.this makes a huge batch. i use some that night, then freeze the rest in quart size ziplocs. makes a quick easy meal especially for busy nights.
hope that helps. let me know if you do the water thing with the paste. i'm curious but not gutsy. :)
I was so curious, I looked it up...and found...
1 (6 oz) can tomato paste plus 1 1/2 cans water equals 1 cup tomato sauce - season as desired.
There are varying amounts given for the substitution. Basically you can stir water into tomato paste until you have the sauce consistency you're looking for. If it thickens too much while cooking, add water as needed.

Jenny! Thanks so much! I looked online but couldn't find an actual ratio/recipe. That's awesome.
That sauce sounds scrumptious, Christina. You're gutsy enough to make your own sauce, but not to experiment with a little can of paste? :)
Nice to "see" you on here, Sam.
well, my curiosity has been answered. good to know. :)
and yes, it's scrumptious! trust me if i wouldn't have been given this recipe from my fam i wouldn't have been gutsy enough to make it. i'm such a chicken in the kitchen. i guess it's good that i married a meat and potatoes kind of guy.
