Wanted: Your Input

This weekend I'm having my first garage sale. It's a multi-family and moving sale. I'm doing it with a friend of mine, and also my in-laws are selling lots of stuff before they move to IL. I've priced everything to sell (translation: I'm not bringing anything back into this house!).
Any suggestions or advice?

Have a $2/bag special about 2 hours before the end of the sale - and advertize that on Friday! Mom did that and we rarely had more than a couple bags for Goodwill.

We had yearly garage sales growing up, so here's a few things I picked up from my mom.

Make sure the prices are obvious on each item because people will put it down rather than ask.

Also, be prepared for people coming up to your sale at 7-8am. Those early birds like to get the good stuff before it's started. Some people will sell to them, and others won't-your decision.

If you're doing adults' clothing, it might sell better if you have it hanging up. Most people won't dig through clothes in a bin as they would if it was children's clothes.

Last, but not least, have a good amount of change. You can bet your 1st sale will be $1 & you'll be handed a $20. :) I think this is why people sell donuts in the morning to round up some extra quarters.

Have fun making a little dough!

Thanks, Pam! What great tips. I myself don't like to dig through clothes, so I plan to hang them up. I will be sure to have lots of change, though! And donuts sound great... mmm...

Hey Karen.
We just had a yard sale and we put everything really really cheap I'm taling all clothes 25cents and alot of things were 10cents to 1.10$ and we had nothing left so sell thing as cheap as you can.
Oh by the way olivea is really a doll.

I've only done one sale myself, but as an attendee make things priced to sell $1 or cheaper. I know in the Midwest things are cheaper, but here on the east coast I'm lucky to find stuff for less than $1 and that's not real great considering I could get it new sometimes for $2 (especially kids clothes I'm referring too. :)

Good luck- and let us know how it goes!

just don't expect to make a ton of cash if you REALLY don't want to bring any of it home! also, have everyone initial stickers with their prices on it that you are selling with so there is no confusion as to who gets what amount of money. we used colored stickers and just put them on sheets of paper with our names on it so that you are not trying to divide cash at time of sale. we have had a huge garage sale every year with about 6 of us. Early birds go without saying!!! You could try hotdogs if you want the hassle, but that ALWAYS brings more cash than the sale!! HAH Wish i could come! i need a good yard sale fix!

I wish you could come, too, Shyla!

Good luck! I'm planning on hosting my first-ever garage sale soon too! We have so much unused stuff that I'd like to try to sell before donating. After that it'll all be boxed/bagged up and off to Goodwill. I'm not going to store it "until next time." Who knows when the next time will be-who knows when the first time will be! :)
