Garage Sale Success...I Guess

Well, I had my first-ever garage sale last weekend, and WOW, what an experience. I was surprised by all the early birds, even though everyone told me to expect them. I was also surprised at the way EVERYONE tries to talk you down in your prices. I guess I'm the only garage saler who doesn't do that!

Friday it was really, really busy. I was surprised by that, too. Saturday was another story. There were little spurts of busy-ness, but mostly people just sort of trickled. I think it was because the weather was very overcast, and it looked like rain all day. Plus, it was SO windy, and despite Nate's best efforts, our signs just didn't hold up.

Among the 3 of us (me, Nate's parents, and my friend), we brought in just over $470. I hear that's pretty good. But you wouldn't beLIEVE how packed my garage still is! We're thinking about trying it again this coming Saturday. We'll see. We've sold several more things on
craigslist since the sale. I might just try to craigslist the nicer things (Is "craigslist" a verb??) and freecycle the rest.

We did the bag sale Saturday afternoon, which brought in a bit more money. (Thanks, Jenny!)

Thanks for your advice, everyone! I'll definitely do it again!

Way to go, girl! Wish I could have been there to shop!

I'm with you, I always feel like a jerk asking someone to come down on their prices (Matt forces me to on big items). I mean, c'mon, it's a garage sale - the prices are low enough already!

early birders are great if you're ready (and if you are one at a garage sale! :) and a HASSLE if you aren't organized!! I must admit I never talked anyone down on prices in my life (i think that's an accurate statement) until i went with my friend Caroline and she talked down EVERYTHING!! So, i am hooked and unapologetic about bartering. They either wanna sell it or put it back in their garage! :) (but, just so you know, i have been on the receiving end of the bartering and some people are hardcore!!)

What is craigslist? I'll have to check it out. Is it similar to eBay?

Craigslist is similar to eBay, yes, but it is primarily localized. As a result, you don't ship things--people come pick them up. Also, there's no bidding. It's basically like a free online classified page, but with no fee for posting items. I LOVE IT!
